A goal of the UDCC is to incorporate anti-bias values and cultural diversity as an important part of its foundation since children live in a diverse and complex society. This approach encourages each child to reach his/her full potential by challenging the barriers created by prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes. In an even deeper way, an anti-bias curriculum gives children the tools to understand the concept of fairness in general and advocate for others.


An anti-bias, culturally diverse curriculum offers a teaching strategy that develops an appreciation of diversity, rather than ignoring, and therefore reinforcing, children’s misunderstandings of differences. Our hope is that through careful attention to representing all differences as equally privileged, represented and respected, children will gain a universal perspective, with which they will be able to approach situations and conflicts as impartial and just participants of society.


The following is an excerpt from Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves by Louise Derman-Sparks and Julie Olsen Edwards, which includes the four goals of anti-bias education:


“Anti-bias education has four core goals, each of which applies to children of all backgrounds and influences every arena of our programs. Each goal interacts and builds on the other three. Together, they provide a safe, supportive learning community for all children. Effective anti-bias education happens when all four goals are part of your program.

Goal 1: Each child will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride and positive social identities.

Goal 2: Each child will express comfort and joy with human diversity; accurate language for human differences; and deep caring human connections.

Goal 3: Each child will increasingly recognize unfairness, have language to describe unfairness, and understand that unfairness hurts.

Goal 4: Each child will demonstrate empowerment and the skills to act, with others or alone, against prejudice and/or discriminatory actions.”1


It is our hope that with intensive meditation upon these goals with the objective of adopting them as the heart of our practice, we can provide an environment in which these goals can be achieved.
